MALACK MOHAMMED HASHIM SAHIB
MALACK MOHAMMED HASHIM
SAHIB - THE HATIM OF OUR TIME
A few days ago, Hazrath Moulana Malack Hafiz Gulzar Ahmed Sahib and my mentor, Dr. Abul Fazal Sahib asked me to document the life and services of Hashim Sahib. His contributions were so vast that it is impossible to record everything, since he followed the principle that what the right hand gives should not be known to the left. However, both my teachers and some of my blog readers insisted me to write whatever I know about him.
Kids who grew up in Melvisharam during the 1980s and 1990s often heard about the benevolence and generosity of Nawab C. Abdul Hakeem Sahib, who was regarded as the Hatim of his time. And the British government conferred upon him the title of 'Nawab' for his innumerable Charites. Similarly, the Hatim of our time was Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib. Many admired his personality and services so deeply that some even named their children after him.
Early Life
Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib was born on 1st
September 1939 in Melvisharam to Janab Malack Khizar Hussain Sahib. He belonged
to the Malack Labbai family, one of the prominent families of the town, with
different branches tracing their origins to places like Madurai, Dindigul, and
Iyyempettai.
Being the eldest son, he was
raised with strict discipline and was very obedient to his parents. He began
his early education at Azeez Bhai School (Maktab), where he received strong
grounding in Islamic knowledge and moral values. In 1944, he joined Islamiah
Boys Primary School (then known as the elementary school) and later completed
his schooling at Islamiah High School, passing his SSLC in 1956.
Hashim Sahib’s name is in serial number 3 among the 15 SSLC successfull candidates.
During his school years, he was
deeply influenced by his theology teacher, Hazrath Moulana Hafiz Abus Sawood
Ahmed Sahib (Rah), who was also the imam of the Pakthini Mosque. Recalling his
student days during the Golden Jubilee of Madarsa E Sabeelur Rashad in 2011,
Hashim Sahib shared how his teacher would gather students at Tahajjud, assign
them streets, and send them in groups with lanterns to wake people for prayer,
something that became their daily routine.
Along with this, he was also
greatly influenced by Hazrath Moulana Mohammed Ibrahim Sahib Bilinchpuri,
Hazrath Moulana Arni Mohammed Ismail Nayyar Rabbani Sahib, and Hazrath Moulana
Abdus Samad Hashmi Sahib. Apart from them, Janab Panapakkam Abdur Rahman Sahib,
Mr. Subba Rattinam Iyer, and Hazrath Moulana Tajuddin Taj Sahib were among his
teachers at the high school level.
He joined New College, Madras for
higher studies and completed his B. A., in 1960. Dr. Syed Abdul Wahab Bukhari
Sahib was the Principal of the College at that time.
Source of Inspiration
He was brought up by his parents
under strong Islamic principles, and the deeply religious atmosphere of the
town further nurtured his character. His personality was shaped by influential
teachers, strict adherence to the Qur’an and Hadith, and the blessed company of
eminent Islamic scholars such as Hazrath Moulana Qari Mohammed Thyyub Sahib
(Rah), Hazrath Mufti Mahmoodul Hasan Sahib (Rah), Hazrath Qari Ameerul Hasan
Sahib (Rah), Hazrath Moulana Mohammed Yacoob Sahib Visharami (Rah), and Hazrath Sheikh Moulana Mohammed Ibrahim Sahib Pandori (Damat Barakatuhum). All of these became
enduring sources of inspiration and guidance in his life.
During a condolence meeting held
in Chennai on 17th July 2025, Janab Mecca Rafeeque Ahmed Sahib (Fareeda Babu Sahib)
fondly remembered Hashim Sahib as “The
man who saw tomorrow while we struggle to see today.”
The secret behind his success lay
in his taqwa. As a result he was bestowed with many good qualities. One
of them was, his farsightedness. Our
beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:
“Beware
of the firasat of the believer, for he sees with the light of Allah.”
Firasat refers to a special inner insight granted by
Allah. A true believer, owing to sincerity, taqwa, and purity of heart, may
perceive matters with a clarity that goes beyond ordinary judgment.
Business
Janab M. Khizar Hussain Sahib established K H
Group in 1962. He was assisted by his son Mohammed Hashim Sahib. He was a keen
learner and picked up many nuances of the leather trade. The company soon
gained a reputation for quality calf leather exports. In 1976, Khizar Hussain
passed away and the group had to be taken over by Mohammed Hashim Sahib. He had
absolute belief in his decisions and doubts never entered his thinking. He
followed his father’s principle “Put Quality Above All” and within some years of
business, he diversified into finished leather and then into shoe-uppers, full
shoes, garments, bags, etc, He had by the late 1990s established an empire,
setting up factories and tanneries all over the Vellore district. Even before
the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board was established and guidelines were
issued to control pollution, he had an ETP at his tannery in 1970s. The tanneries are fully modernised and all in
tune with high non-pollution standards. M. Mohammed Hashim Sahib was a man of principles
who always stood by his word. He would neither bow before buyers nor resort to
flattery; instead, he spoke with honesty, clarity, and dignity. He was one of the leading
industrialists of India in Leather and Footwear Industry for the past 6 decades.
The products of KH group are exported all over the world.
His companies have been providing employment
opportunities to thousands of people over the years. He had greatly contributed
to economic empowerment of this region in particular and to the nation in
general.
His Association with Leather Organisations
Janab M. Mohammed Hashim Sahib
held several important posts in various industrial organisations in the
country. The first among them was South
India Tanners and Dealers Association (SITDA). Hashim Sahib had said,
“SITDA
was the stepping stone which shaped my career in the Leather Sector during my
youthful days.”
His journey with SITDA began as a
Member of the Executive Committee in 1973, and he went on to serve in various
pivotal roles: Joint Secretary (1974-1977), Honorary Secretary (1977-1990),
Vice President (1992-1993), and later as Patron of the Association from 1996
until his demise. His contributions to the Association and the leather industry
at large were both voluminous and invaluable.
Following the Supreme Court
verdict of 1995, a large number of tanneries faced closure, creating widespread
concern about the future of the leather sector. At this critical juncture,
Hashim Sahib, Mecca Rafeeq Ahmed Sahib along with CLRI and NEERI coordinated
measures that enabled the reopening of nearly 700 tanneries within six months.
Again, in 2007, when the Ranipet
leather industry faced another critical juncture with the TNPCB's mandate to achieve
Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD), he once again rose to the occasion. As Chairman of
Chennai Environmental Management Company of Tanners (CEMCOT), he championed the
industry's cause with both Central and State Governments, successfully securing
the necessary grants for establishing state-of-the-art ZLD systems.
During the condolence meeting
held on 10.07.2025, Mr. R. Gandhi, the then MLA of the Ranipet constituency,
recalled the role of Hashim Sahib, who met Mr. M. Karunanidhi and held fruitful
discussions which helped in securing funds of ₹90 crores from the Government of
India and ₹27 crores from the Government of Tamil Nadu for the establishment of
Zero Liquid Discharge systems for six CETPs in Tamil Nadu.
In recognition of his extraordinary
services, the SITDA has named its "Platinum
Jubilee Building" (whose foundation stone was also laid by Hashim
Sahib in 2016) as "Malack Mohamed
Hashim Sahib Square", a lasting tribute to his unmatched
contributions, particularly in addressing and resolving environmental
challenges faced by the industry.
He was one of the honorary
secretaries of AISHTMA from 1979-1985 and later elected as the President twice
(1989-90 and 1995.) Janab Mecca Rafeeq Ahmed Sahib recalls Hashim Sahib’s
contribution to AISHTMA in the following word:
“He was a man of
remarkable vision and quick decision-making. It was during his leadership that
the idea of rebuilding the AISHTMA (All India Skin and Hide Tanners and
Merchants Association, Madras) building emerged. When concerns were raised
about funding, he confidently proposed generating income through a Wattle
Extract business to finance the project. Once he made up his mind, he never
left a task incomplete. Though others suggested constructing only a single
floor, he insisted on building a strong three-storey structure that would last
for decades. Today, the building still stands prominently in Periamet as a
testimony to his foresight, determination, and leadership.”
Hashim Sahib played a significant
role in the centenary celebrations of AISHTMA in 2017.
He was the chairman of the
Leather Export Promotion Council (1980-1985). He was the founder Chairman of
the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) from its inception on 26th
June 1984 onwards, holding chairmanship of CLE for 8 continuous years till 26th
August 1992 and thereafter for another tenure of two years from 3rd
May 1999 to 21st March 2001.
Indian Finished Leather
Manufacturers & Exporters Association (IFLMEA), Indian Shoe Federation
(ISF), Indian Leather Industry Foundation (ILIFO), Chennai Environmental
Management Company of Tanners (CEMCOT), Leather Sector Skill Council (LSSC)
etc.
He played a pioneering leadership
role in environment management in the leather tanning industry in India.
The concept of Common Effluent Treatment Plants initiated in 1980s was a major
industry initiative and he was actively engaged in close coordination with
CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), CSIR-National Environmental
Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), United Nations Industrial Development
Organization (UNIDO) for adoption of cleaner technologies in the leather
industry. He was also connected with Footwear Design and Development
Institution (FDDI) and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT)
Services
Almighty Allah blessed him with
wealth, and he spent what he earned in service of others. The poor, the needy, NGOs, institutions, and every person who came to his door, his
generosity touched all. He embodied the Hadith: “The best of people are those
who are most beneficial to people.
Mosques That Stands As His Legacy
As his father
Janab Khizar Hussain Sahib had also constructed numerous mosques, he inherited
the same passion and commitment for serving the Houses of Allah.
In Melvisharam, he built many
mosques. The first was Masjid-e-Pudupet during 1982–1983, along with the
establishment of a madarsa. In 2018, the first floor of the mosque was constructed.
Today, it is one of the densely populated Muslim settlements in Melvisharam.
In 1987, when the Ahle Sunnath
Lababeen Jamath resolved to undertake the expansion of the Big Mosque of
Melvisharam, Hashim Sahib generously bore the entire expenses for the expansion
of the eastern block of the old mosque.
He also constructed a grand and beautiful
mosque with a tall minaret on the southern side of the Chennai–Bangalore
Highway at Melvisharam. It was formally declared open on Friday, 10th February
1989, the Maghrib prayer led by the Chief Imam of the Haram, Hazrath Abdullah
bin Subail. Prominent Ulama from all over the country were invited. Hazrath Moulana
Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi Rah and Hazrath Moulana Irshad Ahmed Sahib, Muballigh of
Darul Uloom Deoband were among them. This mosque is the monument of Malack
Mohammed of Hashim Sahib and a beautiful landmark structure in Melvisharam.
In 1991, there arose a need for the renovation of the old Saleem Nagar Masjid in Kilvisharam. Earlier, people used to perform prayers under thatched roof. When a group of people from the locality approached Hashim Sahib, he magnanimously donated one lakh rupees, through which a new building comprising the first five safs was constructed.
In the year 2000, Hashim Sahib
contributed towards the reconstruction of the Pakthini Masjid along with his
nephews. After the demise of his beloved eldest son, Janab Malack Mohammed
Shameem Sahib, he constructed a mosque behind the K.H. Quarters and named it
Masjid-e-Shameem. It was formally declared open on Friday, 12th June 2015, from
the Maghrib prayer.
In 2025, he constructed a mosque
at Appapillai Street in Melvisharam and named it after his younger brother as
Masjid-e-Malack Mohammed Saleem. It was opened on Monday, 10th February 2025,
at the Fajr prayer.
Whenever a need arose for the
renovation or reconstruction of the old mosques of our town, he would bear a
major share of the expenses. These are some of the mosques constructed by
Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib at Melvisharam to the best of my knowledge.
However, there is a strong possibility that he may also have contributed
towards many other mosques as well.
Mosques outside Melvisharam
He renovated and expanded the
mosque built by his father at M.A.K.H. Tannery in Ranipet. He also constructed
a mosque at K.H. Shoes India Private Limited. In addition, he built a mosque at
Kaveripakkam beside the National Highway.
He also raised the first floor of
Masjid-e-Umme Salma at Jullundur, Punjab, which had originally been constructed
by his younger brother, Janab Malack Abdul Haleem Sahib.
In 2001, he erected a tall minaret at The
New College Mosque, Chennai. It was a replica of the minaret of Al-Masjid An-Nabawi (SAW), under
the supervision of architect Althaf Ahmed Sahib. For this project, Hashim Sahib
spent approximately Rs. 35 lakhs.
He often expressed his desire to
reconstruct the mosque and remained deeply committed to the project. Unfortunately, his dream remained unfulfilled.
On 18th July 2025, in a condolence meeting held at New College, Chennai, Mr. Ilyas Sait Sahib, the former Secretary of MEASI, requested the members of MEASI to name the New College Mosque as “Masjid-e-Hashim.”
But here in Melvisharam, as a mark of respect, the C. Abdul Hakeem College Mosque was named as Masjid E Malack Mohammed Hashim on 9th September 2025 by MMES. It was actually built by his father Janab M. Khizar Hussain Sahib in 1972.
Hashim Sahib
A Patron of Madaris
In 1976, along with his father, Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib (President) founded Madarsa E Miftahul Uloom. Within a short time, the madarsa grew in strength, and in 1983 he constructed a magnificent building for it along with a hostel (Ahmed Manzil) at Khizarabad. It was formally declared open on 18th April 1983, in the presence of great scholars of that time like Hazrath Moulana Qari Mohammed Thyyub Sahib Rah. (Vice- Chancellor, Darul Uloom Deoband), Hazrath Moulana Hafiz Abus Sawood Sahib Rah. (Founder and Head, Madarsa E Sabeelur Rashad, Bangalore), Hazrath Moulana Merajul Haq Sahib Rah (Sadrul Mudarriseen, Darul Uloom, Deoband), Hazrath Moulana Mufti Ashraf Ali Sahib Rah. (Former Ameer E Shariat, Karnataka), Hazrath Moulana Zainul Abideen Sahib Rah (Professor, Madarsa E Baqiyathus Salihath) and other prominent scholars.
He
also built two quarters for Madarsa staff. One at Malack Abdul Haleem Sahib
Street (Old Post Office Street) and another big complex at Valayalkar Street to
accommodate the Madarsa Staff.
Throughout his life, he was deeply connected
with the Madarsa and always ensured quality education and the well- being of
students. Today, this fifty-year-old
institution (1976–2026) stands as one of the prominent centres of Islamic
education in India. Presently, 530 students are acquiring knowledge along with
food and accommodation and 34 teachers are serving in this seminary.
Madarsa E Baqiyathus Salihath
Mohammed
Hashim Sahib was elected as the member of the administrative council by Majlis
E Shura in 1979. He served Baqiyathus Salihath
for nearly 46 years, as executive member (1979-1988) as General Secretary
(1988–2020) and later as President (2020–2025).
During his service, he strengthened the Madrasa’s finances and improved
its educational system, helping it become more self-sufficient. He also
published the 16-volume Tamil tafseer Jawahirul Quran.
He constructed residential quarters for teachers by spending Rs. 45 lakths. Renovated the old buildings and organized the grand 150th anniversary celebration in December 2013. During 2009, a new branch of the madarsa was started at Khalasibeth, Vellore and in 2010, another branch was opened at Ronaq Nagar, Andhra Pradesh. He was deeply committed to the development of the Madarsa and supported it with great generosity.
He served as the President of Anjuman E
Ansarul Islam which has been maintaining Madarsa E Niswan since 1941. An exclusive
institution for girls in Melvisharam. He had whole heartedly supported the
Madarsa and also gave financial assistance.
He
had also generously contributed to many other Arabic madarsas in and around
Melvisharam. Hazrath Moulana Zabiullah Sahib writes in one of his articles that
most of the land for their madrasa (Madarsa E Kashiful Huda, Poonamallee,
Chennai) was donated by Haji Hashim Sahib, and that he contributed
significantly to its construction at various stages.
He
further notes that Hashim Sahib played an important role in supporting the
financial stability of Darul Uloom Deoband
and extended assistance to several other institutions, including Mazahir Uloom Saharanpur and Nadwatul Ulama Lucknow as well as many religious institutions
across northern and southern India. He was a member of Jamia Darus Salaam,
Oomerabad. He generously contributed a significant amount to the Madarsa and
showed keen interest in its financial stability. He also had cordial relations
with the scholars of Madarsa E Latheefia, Hazrath Makan Vellore.
During
a three days visit to Madarsa E Manbaul Anwar in Lalpet, he recognized the need
for a dining hall. He immediately arranged for its construction and also funded
an additional building.
His Services at Melvisharam
Ahle Sunnath Lababeen Jamath
He was connected with all the
major organisations in Melvisharam. To begin with, he was an executive member
of Ahle Sunnath Lababeen Jamath, a hundred-and-fifty-year-old administrative
organisation. He served it for more than five decades. Though he held prominent
positions in numerous organisations across the country, he would always consult
the Jamath on important matters. During important meetings of the Jamath, he
would listen to problems and suggest solutions with farsightedness. His very
presence was a great strength to the Jamath.
He purchased a piece of land opposite to Pakthini Masjid at Big Street and dedicated it for the construction of the Jamath office in 2010. He considered the Jamath to be a unique source for strengthening unity among the people of Melvisharam. He himself abided by the rules of the Jamath and also advocated that others do the same. He took great efforts towards the financial stability of the Jamath. He had immense care for the Imams, moazzins, and staff of the mosques. He generously contributed to their welfare and always extended a helping hand in times of need.
Financial Assistance to the Needy
Hashim Sahib built and gifted
houses to his staff, the needy, relatives, friends, and widows. With the aim of assisting
the poor, the needy, and widows, he provided provision kits on a monthly basis.
He also extended financial help to people suffering from major illnesses and
chronic ailments. Whether they were relatives or patients from Melvisharam or
outside, he would not only help them financially, but also enquire about the
consulting doctor, hospital, and their well-being during and after treatment.
As far as marriage assistance was
concerned, he would generously provide marriage aid and gift gold jewellery
through the ladies of his household.
Depending on their financial
conditions, he would also bear a major share of the expenses and provide the
necessary items. Even after the marriage, he would enquire about the well-being
of the couples. He would never speak of his charities, boast of his favours, or
remind anyone of them. Whenever someone expressed gratitude for his charity, he
would simply divert the conversation by enquiring about the well-being of their
family.
In 2012, a mob vandalised the
Electricity Board Office at Melvisharam. The incident led to tensions
overnight. Many people were arrested, including several innocent individuals
whose release became difficult due to their financial condition.
A meeting was later conducted by
Jamath, in which prominent members of the Jamath along with Hashim Sahib
participated to sort out solution to the problem. Later, Hashim Sahib
contributed an amount of Rs. 8 lakh from his personal funds and helped secure
the release of the innocent people from jail.
During 2019-20, he constructed
two halls one at the Pudupet (Darus Salam Hall) and the second in Hajipet
(Darul Amaan Hall) locality. This hall
is used for keeping mayyat (Mayyat Khana) used by families who do not have
sufficient space in their homes. Now it is also used for marriages and
community events.
Ramazaan Charities
His charities multiplied during the month of Ramazan. These included special Ramazan donations to various
madrasas, NGOs, charitable organisations, deserving families, neighbours, relatives, distribution of Ramazan provision kits, distribution of cash,
rice, and clothes to the poor Muslims and Non-Muslims. He also arranged free sahri meal distribution for the
poor and sponsored the preparation of Ramazan kanji at the mosques of
Melvisharam.
Relief during Pandemic -2020-2021
To maintain ikhlas and strengthen the Jamath, he carried out many of his charities in the name of the Jamath. During 2021, when the whole world was engulfed in the Coronavirus pandemic and faced lockdowns, people suffered immensely and lost their jobs. After consulting with the Jamath, and with the intention of relieving the grief-stricken, provision kits consisting of groceries, rice, and other essential eatables were distributed throughout Visharam to Muslims and non Muslims. This initiative cost a few crores.
During fundraising events for various causes, he would always be one of the major donors of the town.
His Association with Melvisharam
Muslim Educational Society (MMES)
Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib was one of the oldest
members of the Melvisharam Muslim Educational Society. He was among the
founding committee members of C. Abdul Hakeem College of Arts and Science, for which
he was honoured with a memento during its Golden Jubilee Celebrations in 2016.
He served Islamiah Boys Higher
Secondary School as its Correspondent from 1971 to 1972. Through these
institutions, he worked for the educational upliftment of the town. Notably, he
provided free notebooks and textbooks to needy students.
The members of MMES would often seek his advice on important matters. He also shared a close association with Sakvai Ziauddin Ahmed Sahib, the General Secretary of MMES.
Janab Sakvai Ifthikhar Ahmed Sahib (former correspondent, MMES academy of architecture and present joint secretary of MMES) said in a condolence meeting held at Melvisharam on 11.4.25 Hashim Sahib gave valuable suggestions for the inception of MMES Academy of Architecture and also extended all sorts of support.
He participated in all major
events of MMES, including the Golden Jubilee, Diamond Jubilee, and Centenary
Celebrations. He was the guest of honour during the opening ceremony of CAHCET
auditorium in 2010 and also the newly constructed building of Islamiah Boys
Higher Secondary, Melvisharam on 5th September, 2011.
Qaumi Baitul Mall - Melvisharam
Let
me quote Janab Cafiyar Zafrullah Sahib’s (one of the founders of Qaumi Baitul
Mal), speech during the condolence
meeting of Hashim Sahib held in Melvisharam on 11.04.2025
“At
a time when interest-based lending had become widespread among small traders,
Haji Sahib (Hashim Sahib) became deeply concerned and encouraged the youth to
establish a Bait-ul-Maal nearly forty-five years ago. The institution
was started in 1980 with a small amount to provide interest-free loans for
small businessmen and traders so that they could run their businesses without
falling into interest. I remember that a monthly assistance of one “hundred
rupees was distributed to nearly one hundred needy people. Today, around five
hundred widows and needy individuals receive approximately two thousand five
hundred rupees each. Even now, all these services continue uninterrupted.
Haji Sahib remained deeply
attached to the Bait-ul-Maal throughout his life and continued as its
President until his final days, even after resigning from many other
organisations. He regularly attended general body meetings, carefully examined
accounts, and would enquire about the welfare activities of the institution. In
particular, he would feel immensely happy whenever loans of poor borrowers were
written off. A few years ago, when the Bait-ul-Maal faced a financial
need, Haji Sahib personally contributed a major share of the required funds.
Thereafter, when traders and businessmen were approached in his name, they came
forward generously and contributed beyond expectations. People believed that
wherever Haji Sahib’s name was associated, there would always be barakah and
growth.”
Melvisharam Town Uplift Committee
When indiscipline and unrest
began to spread among the youth, Haji Sahib became greatly disturbed. He
gathered people from various organisations political groups and
urged them to forget their differences and unite for the welfare of the town.
Under his guidance, the Melvisharam Town Uplift Committee was formed around
2010 to address social problems and maintain harmony in the community. A group
of dedicated youngsters was organised to patrol the streets at night and
prevent disturbances and illegal activities. This noble service continues even
today.
KH SCHOOLS
KH Matriculation School was
established in 1991 by Janab Mohamed Hashim Saheb, with the vision of the
holistic child development. Initially starting with 16 staff and 89 students,
the school expanded quickly, gaining state recognition in 1994 and extending to
higher grades annually.
In 1996, a separate boys school
campus was established in Then Nandiyalam. Over time, KH Matriculation School
evolved into KH Group of Schools, featuring distinct campuses for boys and
girls, KH Matriculation Boys Higher Secondary School and KH Matriculation Girls
Higher Secondary School. By 1998, the group was elevated to Higher Secondary
School status.
As of the time recorded, the Boys
School has 570 students and 60 staff, while the Girls School has 1707 students
and 150 staff. On August 14, 2013, the institution was certified as Muslim
Minority Institution by the National Commission for Minority Educational
Institutions.
The school celebrated its Silver
Jubilee under the Presidentship of Mohammed Hashim Sahib in January 2016 in a
grand manner. KH Group of Schools is now recognized as a leading institution in
Ranipet district, known for quality education for 35 years. His vision,
planning and farsightedness had played pivotal role in its development.
KH Boys School has been an NIOS study centre since 2013. Since then, nearly 250 to 300 students, including Imams and Ulama Hazrat from Visharam, Arcot, Ranipet, Walajapet, Kalmelkuppam, Arni, and Vellore, have passed the SSLC/Secondary Course through the NIOS Board. Alhamdulillah, students of Miftah-ul-Uloom Madarsa have also been appearing for the NIOS Board exams every year.
Inspire Educational Academy
During 2018–19, with the noble objective of educating
students who had discontinued their studies for various reasons and reducing
the school dropout rate in Melvisharam, a special educational initiative was
launched under the guidance of Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib. Volunteers carried
out extensive fieldwork to identify and bring back school dropouts into the
stream of education.
Initially, special evening
classes were conducted at AMI School and later shifted to KH Schools to prepare
the students for the 8th Standard and SSLC public examinations. Qualified
teachers were appointed to provide free coaching, and the students were also
supported with stipends.
The first batch appeared for the
2019 public examinations and achieved satisfactory results. To encourage and
honour their efforts, a special felicitation programme was organized in which
successful candidates were presented with certificates and awards by Hashim
Sahib and other dignitaries.
Successful candidates above the
age of 18 working in the KH Group of Companies were also given special
increments as an encouragement to continue their education. Under this Academy,
a group of Ulama too pursued their studies through this initiative, completed
their SSLC and Higher Secondary education, and are now pursuing degree courses.
Since then, this programme has continued successfully, helping many individuals
resume their education and build a better future.
KH Apollo Hospital
Initially, Hashim Sahib made
efforts to revive the Millath Hospital.
Established in 1952 by Anjuman E Falah E Millath (Millath Anjuman) of which his
father, Janab M. Khizar Hussain Sahib, was a member. As part of reviving
measures, Hashim Sahib constructed an operation theatre, started an ambulance
service and also appointed native doctors to ensure 24 hours service facility.
This initiative could not be sustained for long.
During late 1990s a NGO named
Dawatul Qair was established under the guidance of Hazrath Moulana Yacoob Sahib
(Rah). Hashim Sahib and few other elders of the Melvisharam town extended
financial support to this NGO. Initially, it sponsored free maternity treatment
through Fathima clinic and later founded Darushshifa Hospital which continued
its service up to 2103.
Hashim Sahib in collaboration
with Apollo Hospitals, established the KH Apollo Hospital on 14th
September 2003 at Melvisharam with the vision of providing quality healthcare
facilities to the people of this region.
Though he was advised to charge
fees equivalent to Apollo Hospitals, he declined and instead ensured quality
treatment at subsidised and affordable rates. He personally compensated for any
financial deficit from his business earnings. Today, the hospital has grown
into a 100-bed multi-speciality institution and also offers a few medical
courses.
Continuing his commitment towards
accessible healthcare, Hashim Sahib also established the KH Clinic next to Malack Abdul Haleem Sahib Street at
Melvisharam in 2025 to provide treatment at nominal cost to the public of
Melvisharam.
His Association with Tableeghi
Jamath
In May 1997, a grand Islamic gathering (Ijtima) was
held at the grounds of C. Abdul Hakeem College. It created great Islamic
awareness among the people of Melvisharam.
Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib
actively participated in the consultation meetings held at the College Mosque
for nearly six months before the Ijtima. He supervised the arrangements daily.
He also constructed the kitchen and toilet facilities near the mosque, where
Madarsa-e-Umar functions today. Whenever financial needs arose, he contributed liberally.
Along with Hazrath Moulana Hajiar
Abdul Latheef Sahib and other elders, he travelled in Jamaat to Delhi, Kanpur,
Bangalore, Lucknow, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka to strengthen the work of the
Ijtima movement.
In 2001, Dr. Nadir Ali Khan Sahib
came to Melvisharam and stayed at Khanqah-e-Mahmoodia in the company of his
Sheikh, Hazrath Qari Ameerul Hasan Sahib. His regular bayans inspired many
people, especially youngsters, to participate in Tablighi activities.
Following the guidance of Haji
Vallikan Haneef Ahmed Sahib (Ameer Sahib), Hashim Sahib formed his own
three-day Jamaat along with the elders of the town. They travelled to Ambur,
Vaniyambadi, Pernambut, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Kilakarai, Kayalpatnam, and
parts of Kerala. He carried on his train journey along with Jamath in second
and third class category. Wherever he travelled, people invited him to stay at
their homes. However, he politely refused and preferred to stay in mosques with
the Jamaath.
These efforts brought fruitful
results. Within weeks or month of his Jamath’s visit, Jamaaths from those
places began visiting Melvisharam. Religious awareness increased among those
people. After returning to their native towns, many participated in Tablighi
activities with greater vigour.
His Association with Anjuman E
Himayath E Islam- Chennai
Janab Padma Shri Mecca Mohammed
Rafeeq Sahib, a close friend of Hashim Sahib recalled his services in a
condolence meeting held at New College on 18th July 2025 in the
following words:
Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib
joined the institution in 1970 and rendered dedicated service for more than
five decades. He served in various capacities and was the Vice President for 13
years. He also served as the Chairman of the Religious Committee. He was very
particular that the institution should strictly follow Islamic values and
principles. He continued in this responsibility until his demise. During the
125th year celebrations on 29th July, 2015, he played a key role in
organizing an important session on “The Role of a Muslim in a Diverse Society.”
The session featured distinguished scholars including Hazrat Moulana Mahmud
Madani Sahib and Dr. Farida Khanam Sahiba. The programme was remembered as an
intellectually and spiritually enriching event.
Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib made
a remarkable contribution towards the expansion of Darul Ansar Centre for Applied
Learning (DACAL) one of Chennai’s finest institutions for specially-abled
children. When the challenge of limited space and increasing student strength
was brought to his attention, he immediately volunteered to fund the
construction of two additional floors.
He donated ₹4.5 crores for the
project. This generous contribution helped in increase of student strength from
120 to 250 students. The new building today stands as a symbol of his
compassion and foresight.
Even more remarkable was his
continued support after the construction. For the past several years, he had
been sponsoring the operational expenses of the school, including the expenses
of nearly 250 students and their teachers.
His contribution was not merely a
donation, but a living legacy. His services continue to be remembered in the
prayers of the children, their parents, and generations to come.
His Association with Ulama
There is a well-known saying in
English: “A man is known by the company he keeps.” From his very school
days, Janab Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib was blessed with the companionship of
great Ulama-e-Ikram. As mentioned earlier, apart from the native scholars of
Melvisharam, he shared a close attachment with Hazrath Moulana Qari Mohammed
Thyub Sahib (Rah.), who was also his first Sheikh in the path of Tasawwuf.
An interesting anecdote was
shared by his son, Hazrath Moulana Mohammed Ibrahim Sahib (DBM), during the
condolence meeting held at Melvisharam on 11 July 2025. He narrated that in
1974, Hazrath Qari Thyub Sahib departed for Hajj along with Chinmeera Rasheed
Ahmed Sahib. At that very time, Hashim Sahib was on a business trip in London.
During his stay there, he received a phone call from his father, Janab M.
Khizar Hussain Sahib, instructing him to proceed for Hajj and join Qari Sahib.
Without delay, he immediately made the necessary arrangements, departed for the
sacred journey, joined his Sheikh, and had the honour of performing Hajj in his
blessed company.
Since 1954, Hazrath Qari Thyub
Sahib had been visiting Melvisharam regularly and would stay at Thyub Manzil
in Big Street. Even during his final illness, he preferred to remain in
Melvisharam and was later called back to Deoband by his family members. Such
was his attachment with this town that he chose to spend his last days here. He
passed away on 17 July 1983.
During his stays in Melvisharam,
many people would take Bai‘at at his hands and seek his guidance in
Tasawwuf. His demise created a great void in this spiritual sphere. Later, this
need was fulfilled with the arrival of Hazrath Mufti Mahmoodul Hasan Sahib Rah
to Masjid E Khizar and establishment of Khankha E Mahmoodia whose details are
coming in the forth coming paragraphs.
Likewise, he held
Hazrath Moulana Hafiz Hyder Abdul Azeez Sahib Rah, the founding Principal of
Madarsa-e-Miftahul Uloom, in high esteem and regard. Any donation appeal or recommendation letter
endorsed by Abdul Azeez Hazrath, was readily accepted by Hashim Sahib.
In the later part of his life
Hashim Sahib was closely attached to Hazrath Moulana Kalambur Mohammed Yaqoob
Sahib Rah. He would seek the guidance of Hazrath on important matters. His son
Hazrath Moulana Mohammed Zabiullah Sahib narrates in one of his article titled
The Eternal Life (Hayat E Jawidani) writes about Hashim Sahib’s close
relationship with his father in the following words:
“Haji Malack Mohammed Hashim
Sahib shared a deep bond of love and reverence with my late father, Hazrath
Maulana Muhammad Yaqoob Sahib (Rah.), the former Ameer-e-Shari‘at of Tamil
Nadu. Despite his numerous responsibilities, Haji Sahib would regularly visit
him, seek his guidance, and attach great importance to his advice in matters
related to Madrasa Miftahul Uloom, Baqiyatus Salihat, as well as his personal
affairs. He regarded my father’s counsel as final. Likewise, my late father
also held him in high esteem and considered him a sincere benefactor of the
community.
By the grace of Allah,
Melvisharam became widely recognised as a religious town through the sacrifices
and services of its elders. Yet, certain old customs and un-Islamic practices
still persisted. In accordance with the teachings of Darul Uloom Deoband, my
father worked tirelessly through sermons and guidance to reform these
practices. During several difficult phases, Haji Hashim Sahib stood firmly
beside him like a pillar of support. Through the united efforts of these two
noble personalities, Melvisharam gradually emerged as a shining example of the
Deobandi tradition. Insha Allah, this noble service will remain a lasting
Sadaqah Jariyah for both of them.
KhanKha E Mahmoodia
Haji Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib also possessed immense love and respect for Darul Uloom Deoband and its esteemed Ulama. He would frequently invite them to Melvisharam, enabling people from the town and surrounding regions to benefit from their speeches, guidance, and spiritual teachings.
Hashim Sahib personally met Hazrath Mufti Mahmoodul Hasan Sahib (Rah.), the Khalifa of Hazrath Sheikhul Hadees Moulana Zakariyya Sahib (Rah.), several times between 1991 and 1994 and earnestly requested him to spend the days of I‘tikaf in Melvisharam during the month of Ramadan. In this effort, he was also assisted by Hazrath Sheikh Moulana Mohammed Ibrahim Sahib Pandori (Damatbarakatuhum), the Khadim-e-Khaas of Mufti Sahib and a Khalifa of Hazrath Sheikhul Hadees.
These sincere efforts eventually
bore fruit. Hazrath Mufti Mahmoodul Hasan Sahib accepted the invitation and
stayed in Melvisharam during the Ramadan of 1995. Along with Hazrath, thousands
of Ulama from different parts of India and abroad gathered in Melvisharam.
During this blessed period, hundreds of simple marriages were conducted under
Islamic principles. Prior to this, several un-Islamic customs had become common
in marriages, but these simple marriages inspired many others to follow the
Sunnah.
At that time, many among the
younger generation were unfamiliar with the teachings and spirit of Tasawwuf.
Through the arrival and guidance of Hazrath Mufti Sahib, the importance of
spiritual reformation became widely recognised. Numerous people took Bai‘at at
his hands, repented sincerely for their sins, and transformed their lives.
Following him, Hazrath Moulana
Kalambur Mohammed Yaqoob Sahib Ameer E Shariat, Tamilnadu observed Etikaf in
Masjid E Khizar during the Ramazan of 1997. Followed by him Hazrath Qari
Ameerul Hasan Sahib (Rah.) performed I‘tikaf at Khanqah-e-Mahmoodia from
1998 until 2012. Thereafter, Mufti Thahir Sahib has been leading the Khanqah
and its spiritual activities.
Hashim Sahib held immense
reverence and respect for all these noble Ulama. He would sit in their
gatherings with utmost humility, adab, and devotion. From 1995 until his demise
in 2025, he continued to host these gatherings with remarkable sincerity, generosity,
and dedication. Thousands of people visited this spiritual centre every year
and benefited immensely from it. All guests and visitors were received with
warm hospitality. Yet, despite personally overseeing every arrangement, Hashim
Sahib would humbly avoid attributing the service to himself. Instead, he would
say, “It is not I who is hosting them; rather, they are the guests of the
Hazrat.”
An Act of Piety
His
close associates revealed during his condolence meeting that, by the grace of
Almighty Allah, Hashim Sahib had decided to free himself completely from bank
loans, though it was not an easy task. In order to achieve this, he sold many
of his assets and repaid the loans in full. This act of piety and reliance upon
Allah brought immense barakah in his business and increased his profits
manifold. As Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:
“Allah destroys interest and gives increase
for charities. And Allah does not like every sinning disbeliever.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:276)
He strongly advocated Islamic Banking and Islamic
Finances.
A Servant of Haj Pilgrims
Janab Malack Mohammed Hashim
Sahib joined the Madras Haj Service Society as a member on 20th October 1977.
He was elected as the President of the society on 16th November 1986
and continued to serve in that position for nearly 39 years until his demise.
Under his dynamic leadership, the
society witnessed remarkable growth and development. He maintained excellent
relations with the office bearers, trustees, and managing committee members,
and worked tirelessly for the welfare of the Hujjaj of Tamil Nadu. In 1996, the
society achieved a historic milestone with the construction of the Tamil Nadu
Baitul Hujjaj, Chennai, at a cost of Rs. 4.75 crores. For this noble cause, Malack Mohammed Hashim
Sahib, along with Marhum Janab A.V.M. Abdul Karim Sahib and Marhum Janab H.
Mohamed Abdul Sahib, travelled extensively throughout Tamil Nadu to mobilise
funds and support from the Muslim community. Hence this building has 66 rooms
and 5 halls.
Due to the increase of pilgrims
in 2002 a land adjacent to the Haj house was purchased. In 2006, another major
achievement was realised with the construction of a four-storey annex building
for the Haj House at a cost of Rs. 4.9 crores.
When he was informed about a
proposal of airport at Sriperumbudur in near future, Hashim Sahib travelled to
New Delhi and consulted the matter at ministerial level and took measures with
farsightedness. Half of the land was purchased by him and another half was
donated by B. S. Abdur Rahman Group. He strictly followed the government’s
guidelines and sought the approval. In 2019, under his guidance and efforts,
the society consecrated a beautiful masjid, namely Baitul Hujjaj Masjid, at Mambakkam
village near Sriperumbudur, at a cost of Rs. 4 crores. The airport is yet to
come but Baitul Hujjaj has been a comfortable place for pilgrims to wear Ahram.
He greatly strengthened the
society, and his services towards the Haj pilgrims and the Muslim community
will always be remembered.
Contributions to Periamet mosque,
Chennai
Janab Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib dedicated more
than six decades of his life to the service of the Periamet Jamath with
sincerity, commitment, and a deep sense of responsibility. He first served as
the Secretary for nearly fifteen years and later continued as the President for
about twenty-two years until his final days. During his long tenure, the Jamath
passed through many financial and administrative challenges, yet he remained
constantly involved in finding solutions and ensuring stability.
He was especially concerned about
the welfare of the employees and insisted that salaries should always be paid
on time. Even a slight delay in salary payments would trouble him greatly.
One of his major contributions
was the expansion and development of the mosque. When the existing space became
insufficient, he took personal interest in extending the mosque premises and
supervised the construction of additional buildings. Through careful planning,
he also helped to establish financial stability for the mosque, making it
largely self-sufficient through rental income and other arrangements. As part of his efforts to improve the facilities of
the mosque for the comfort of the worshippers, he also arranged for the installation
of a 180-ton air-conditioning system in the mosque at an approximate cost of
Rs. 45 lakhs. Because
of the foundation he laid, the mosque today stands financially secure by the
grace of Allah.
He also gave great importance to
Islamic education. Under his guidance, a Maktab was established in the mosque
where children from several surrounding areas began receiving religious
education. Later, he paid special attention to college students as well.
Arrangements were made for students who remained free during the evenings to
attend classes and benefit from Islamic learning in the mosque environment. Around
fifty to sixty students completed Hifz under these initiatives and became
Huffaz. Many of them now lead Taraweeh prayers in different mosques.
MEASI and New College
Janab Malack Mohammed Hashim
Sahib served as the President of MEASI and Chairman of the Managing Committee
of The New College from 1991 to 1997.
A distinguished alumnus of the
institution, his tenure witnessed several important developments, including the
inception of MEASI Academy, (1991), MEASI charitable Trust (1992), MEASI
Computer Academy (1994), MEASI Institute of Research in Soil Biology and
Bio-Technology (1995) and The MEASI Institute of Hotel Management and Catering
Technology (1995).
A few years later,
he proposed that the Catering Technology course be discontinued. When the
members enquired about the reason, he explained that the course involved
training related to serving liquor, which is prohibited in Islam. When asked
about the huge investment made in the institution, Hashim Sahib firmly replied,
“Close it, Allah will give more.” Acting upon his conviction, the course was
discontinued in 2001. Around the same period, the MEASI Academy of
Architecture, established in 1999, went on to bring great name and recognition
to MEASI.
The inauguration of the Haji
Anaikkar Abdul Shukoor Sahib (HAAS) Auditorium in 1995 also took place during
his tenure. A visionary educationist and philanthropist, he took keen interest
in the growth and welfare of the college.
While appointing staff, he would prefer talent and merit. He would appoint them irrespective of their socio-religious background. For more than fifteen years, he sponsored the entire Ramzan Iftar expenses at the college, benefiting over one thousand people daily. He also extended generous support towards the New College Masjid, scholarships for deserving students, and Ramzan gifts for the non-teaching staff. He played a key role in organising the major events like the centenary celebrations of MEASI, the Golden and Diamond Jubilee of New College etc.,
A big heart Behind Big Events
Nearly a century ago, in 1927, Jamal
Mohamed Sahib, a benevolent Muslim leather merchant and close associate of C.
Abdul Hakeem Sahib, undertook remarkable efforts to promote Islamic awareness among
the Muslim youth of his time. With this noble vision, he organised a series of
Islamic lectures in Chennai by inviting internationally renowned scholars such
as Syed Sulaiman Nadwi, Sir Muhammad Iqbal, and Marmaduke Pickthall at venues
including the historic Gokhale Hall and other prominent places in the city. The
lectures delivered during those gatherings were later compiled and published as
books, many of which continue to serve as valuable references even today.
It is often said that history
repeats itself. Nearly eight decades later, Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib revived
a similar spirit of intellectual and spiritual awakening. Deeply concerned
about the religious and moral upliftment of the Muslim youth and masses, he
initiated and hosted numerous large-scale conferences, gatherings, and
awareness programmes that drew participants from across the region.
On one occasion, Peer Zulfiqar
Ahmad remarked in one of his bayans, “To run a big show, one should have a
big heart.” The statement aptly reflected the personality of Hashim Sahib,
who was blessed with extraordinary organisational skills, foresight, and
remarkable abilities in planning and execution. The success and impact of the
many programmes hosted under his leadership stand as a testimony to these
qualities.
Here, it would be appropriate to highlight some of the major events and conferences organised under his guidance and patronage.
Conferences
The opening ceremony of Masjid E
Khizar in 1989. Whose chief guest the Chief Imam of Haram, Abdullah Bin Subail
offered Maghrib prayers along with him hundreds of prominent scholars joined
the event and a huge public. The establishment of Khankha E Mahmoodia at Masjid
E Khizar in 1995.
Later, in 2005, a three-day Faith
Conference was organised at The New College at a time when many youngsters were
drifting away from the path of Sunnah. Under the guidance of Hazrath Maulana
Muhammad Yaqoob Sahib (Rah), Hashim Sahib took the initiative to conduct this
grand programme. Renowned scholars of international repute from London, South
Africa, and leading scholars of India, including Hazrath Mufti Sayeed Sahib
Rah, Hazrath Moulana Riyasat Ali Sahib Rah, Syed Salman Nadwi (DBM) and Hazrath
Maulana Syed Sajjad Nomani (DBM), participated in the conference. The event was organised on a massive scale and reflected Hashim Sahib’s exceptional administrative and organisational abilities. Mufti Mufti Shakeel Sahib (DBM), who closely observed the arrangements, would often praise Hashim Sahib and his staff member Janab K. V. Rafeeq Sahib for their remarkable management and coordination.
Events like Haq Ki Pukar (June-2004), Tahafuze Shariat Conferences, Khatm e Nabuvat Conference, Jamiat E Ulama conference were also organised by him.
In 2006, the All India Personal Law Board Meeting presided by Hazrath Allama Rabe’ Nadwi Rah at New College, Chennai hosted by him.
Visit of Scholars of Global
Reputation
Hazrath Mufti Taqi Usmani Sahib
(DBM)
Among
the many remarkable programmes organised by Hashim Sahib, one of the most
notable was the visit of Hazrath Mufti Taqi
Usmani (DBM), a scholar of international repute, to Melvisharam on 12th
July 2010. The programme was held at Masjid-e-Khizar, where Hazrath conducted
the Khatam-e-Bukhari majlis followed by a public lecture attended by a large
gathering. On that occasion, Hazrath stayed at the residence of Janab Late Malack
Mohammed Shameem Sahib eldest son of Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib.
A
day earlier to this visit, special bayans by Hazrath were also organised at The
Residency Towers and the Tamil Nadu Hajj House in
Chennai. These lectures were later compiled and published in the form of
a book.
Hazrath Peer Zulfiqar Sahib Rah.
The
very next year, in 2011, Hashim Sahib hosted another enlightening spiritual
gathering featuring Hazrath Maulana Peer Zulfiqar Ahmad (Rah) in Melvisharam.
Hazrath arrived on 18th April 2011 at around 10:00 pm at Khizarabad, where a
huge gathering of Ulama and the public eagerly awaited his arrival to catch a
glimpse of him. Along with him a team of his Khulafa also arrived.
The following morning, after Fajr
prayer on 19th April 2011, a large number of people stood in long queues for
musafaha. Despite being the host of the programme, Hashim Sahib himself stood
humbly in the queue like everyone else. After greeting Hazrath, he remained
standing beside him with humility until the entire gathering had completed the
musafaha.
At around 11:00 am, a bayan for
women was conducted at K.H. Matriculation Girls Higher Secondary School, while
arrangements for men were made at Mahmood Hall. Later in the evening, after
Maghrib prayer at 6:45 pm, another grand bayan was delivered at the ground
adjacent to Madarsa-e-Mifthahul Uloom, which continued until 9:00 pm followed
by dua and Isha prayer.
To facilitate these programmes,
Hashim Sahib coordinated with the social workers and NGOs of Melvisharam and
made remarkable arrangements for the comfort of the attendees. Carpets were
laid throughout the venue, polythene bags were distributed for carrying
footwear, water bottles and packed food were provided to visitors, and distant
parking arrangements were organised systematically. These thoughtful
arrangements shows Hashim Sahib’s extraordinary hospitality and organisational
excellence.
Hazrath Mufti Shakeel Sahib (DBM), a khalifa of Hazrath Peer Zulfiqar Sahib (Rah), highly praised the services rendered by the volunteers and also made special dua for Janab Gumus Mohammed Kaleemullah Sahib for his dedicated arrangements.
Hashim Sahib would
often say, “Gumus Mohammed Kaleemullah Sahib and Cafiyar Zafrullah Sahib are my
two eyes,” shows the close bond he shared with them.
When Hazrath Peer Zulfiqar Sahib
(Rah) departed from Melvisharam, he expressed great happiness over the comfort
of his stay and highly appreciated the remarkable organisation of the
programmes and the facilities provided to the visitors.
Sesquicentennial Celebration of
Baqiyathus Salihath- 150th anniversary
Similarly, in December 2013,
Hashim Sahib played a leading role in organising the 150th anniversary celebrations
of Madarsa-e-Baqiyathus Salihat. Nearly six months before the event, he began
conducting regular consultation meetings to ensure the success of the
programme. Despite his old age, he took immense effort and paid attention to
every minute detail, giving importance to even the smallest arrangements.
Hazrath Mufti Shakeel Sahib (DBM)
mentioned that during these consultation meetings, he closely observed Hashim
Sahib’s remarkable qualities such as planning, sincerity, punctuality, and
dedication, which deeply impressed him.
On this occasion, distinguished
scholars from various parts of India, as well as scholars from Makkah Mukarramah
including representative of Madarsa-e-Soulatiya, were invited. Like the earlier
programmes, this event too became a grand success through the cooperation of
the administration and the tireless efforts of social workers at the ground
level who dedicated themselves wholeheartedly under Hashim Sahib’s God-gifted
leadership and organisational skills. One of his greatest qualities was his
ability to bring together Ulama from different regions and various schools of
thought onto a single platform.
Chennai Flood Relief-2015
Malack
Mohammed Hashim Sahib was always at the forefront in helping people during
times of distress and calamity. In 2004, when the Tsunami caused devastating
loss of life and property, the Jamiat Ulama
organised relief camps in various places. On that occasion, Hashim Sahib
contributed generously towards the relief efforts, which was later acknowledged
and appreciated by the Jamiat Ulama.
Similarly,
during the 2015 Chennai floods, when thousands of people suffered immensely,
Hashim Sahib once again came forward with compassion and generosity. With the
support of his close associates and Jamiat E Ulama E Hind he organised relief
activities at the Tamil Nadu Hajj House
and extended large-scale assistance to the affected people. Food packets and
essential provisions were carefully prepared, and considering the needs of
those who did not consume non-vegetarian food, he specifically instructed that
vegetarian meals be arranged. Milk, biscuits, and bread were separately
provided for children.
In
addition, clothes for children, women, and men were purchased in large
quantities, brought in containers, packed at the H.M. Auditorium in
Melvisharam, and dispatched to the flood-affected relief camps despite the
severe difficulty caused by waterlogged roads. His thoughtful planning,
compassion, and humanitarian spirit brought comfort and relief to countless
suffering families.
His Role in Politics
Throughout his life, he had the privilege of meeting leaders of national and international repute. He led numerous delegations representing the leather industry as well as social and public causes, presenting the grievances and concerns of the people before international firms, national organizations,PrimeMinisters ,Presidents Governors, Chief Ministers, and ministerial authorities.
Despite possessing remarkable leadership qualities and influence, he consciously stayed away from active politics. Yet leaders from every political party would visit his home or office during elections to seek his guidance and blessings.
In
1998, when Mr. M. Karunanidhi former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu visited
Melvisharam, Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib met him at the gathering and donated Rs. 500,000/-towards
the Kargil Relief Fund.
Kargil Relief Fund
Irrespective of political affiliations, leaders from all parties sought his counsel and guidance on important matters.
After the 2011 local body elections in Melvisharam, a group of newly elected municipal councillors met him for his blessings. On that occasion, he advised them to rise above party differences and work together sincerely for the welfare of the public and the development of the town.
Lifetime
Achievement Awards
As
a mark of recognition for his remarkable services in various fields, he
received numerous honours and awards. Among them was the prestigious title of “Doyen of the Leather Industry”
conferred upon him in 2017, followed by the Lifetime Achievement Award
presented by the Council for Leather Exports
in 2018.
On
30.07.2017, The Anaikar Arabic Higher Secondary School (Ambur) in its Golden
Jubilee Celebration honoured Janab Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib with a
Life-Time Achievement Award’ presented by Mr. S. A. Raman, the then Collector
of Vellore District
Further,
on 31st January 2025, during
the Golden Jubilee celebrations of OMEIAT,
he was once again honoured in recognition of his lifelong contributions by Mr. Udhayanidhi Stalin, the then Deputy Chief Minister
of Tamil Nadu.
A Benefactor Passes Away
During his final days, Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib gradually entrusted responsibilities to his heirs and performed Umrah along with family. After a brief period of illness, he passed away at his residence during the last hours of Friday, on 4th July 2025, around 6:00 p.m. May Allah with His infinite Mercy accept his good deeds, forgive his sins and bless him the highest abode in Heaven Aameen. May his legacy continue inspire the present and future generation.
The
following day, his Janazah prayer was attended by a massive gathering. Led by Hazrath Mufti Abul Qasim Banarasi(DBM). He
was thereafter laid to rest between Masjid-e-Khizar and Mahmood Hall, amidst an
outpouring of grief, prayers, and tributes from people belonging to all walks
of life.
Before concluding this lengthy
article, I would like to quote Janab Malack Abdul Wahab Sahib, son of Malack
Mohammed Hashim Sahib, who beautifully summarized his father’s contributions in
three points. According to him, whenever any institution came under Hashim
Sahib’s administration, he ensured three things:
1. Infrastructure development
2. Financial independence and
stability
3. Creation of a dedicated and
committed team in every organization.
Conclusion
Recording the services of this benevolent personality
is a voluminous work. It is not possible to preserve all his contributions in a
single article. When I
joined M.Phil. at Islamiah College (Autonomous) Vaniyambadi in 2013, I chose “Malack
Mohammed Hashim Sahib – A Social Worker” as the topic for my dissertation.
Prof. M. Mohammed Suhail Sahib, then Head of the Department of History,
appreciated the topic but advised me to obtain permission from Hashim Sahib,
which I did not dare to seek at that time. Since then, I have been collecting
information about his services from various personalities and sources. By the
grace of Almighty Allah, that effort has materialized today in the form of this
article.
The purpose of writing this
article is to preserve his remarkable services so that they may serve both as a
source of inspiration for future generations and as a valuable reference for
researchers and readers alike. I humbly suggest that the institutions established
by him or associated with him may organize endowment lectures and memorial
events to continue and preserve his legacy. A similar suggestion was made by
Dr. Ramasamy, former Director of Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai during
the condolence meeting held among leather organizations on 17 July 2025.
Subsequently, on 1 September 2025, a memorial lecture was conducted at Chennai
in his honour. He has also composed a poem praising Hashim Sahib’s farsightedness whose image is given below
Several sources were immensely helpful in compiling this article, including History and Evolution of Leather Industry in Vellore District, the AISHTMA Centenary Souvenir, SITDA and RANITEC Annual Reports (2024–25), condolence messages delivered by his close associates at various condolence gatherings, and souvenirs published by institutions connected with him. Above all, the Urdu biography titled 'Ek Wali Sifat Tajir Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib Ke Hayath aur Khidmaat' (Vol. I), compiled by his son Maulana Malack Mohammed Ibrahim Sahib (DBM), proved to be an exceptionally valuable and commendable resource in the preparation of this article. I thank Hazrath Moulana Arhsad Ahmed Sahib DBM, (Imam Pakthini Masjid, Melvisharam) and Hazrath Moulana Suhailur Rahman Sahib (DBM), (Imam, Masjid E Quba, Veppoor) for giving me the recently published above mentioned biography of Malack Mohammed Hashim Sahib.
